Riningan

The is reputed to be the most exalted eye of the Three Great Dōjutsu, along with the and the.

While its ancestor was first seen in the eyes of as Rinne , its true form first manifested in his son, the Sage of the Six Paths. It is characterized by a wave-like pattern extending across the eyeball, with sclerae and light purple irises, and also has another variant containing a six-tomato pattern.

History of the Rinnegan

It is said that when the world is in disorder, a person is sent from heaven to become either a “God of Creation” who will calm the world, or a “Destroyer” who will reduce everything to nothingness. Rinnegan originated from Kaguya Ōtsutsuki’s Rinne Sharingan, and was first truly manifested by his son, Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, who became the Sage of the Six Paths by using his dōjutsu to create the foundations that gave birth to all modern ninjutsu.

Because of the Sage’s mythical status, many people believed that the Rinnegan was merely a legend or a mutation since the Rinnegan was wielded by the Sage of the Six Ways, the fusion of the chakra of his two sons, Indra Ōtsutsuki and Ashura Ōtsutsuki, in a person’s body gives rise to the Sage’s chakra which, over varying periods of time, can evolve the Sharingan into the Rinnegan. This was proven when , the reincarnation of Indra, awakened the dōjutsu of his eternal Mangekyō Sharingan by infusing the DNA of Hashirama Senju, the reincarnation of Ashura, into his body; however, it didn’t manifest itself until many years later, when he was close to death. At some point, Madara implanted his eyes in – a young boy of Senju lineage. Under Madara’s guise and inheriting the latter’s work, claimed he had the right to take the Rinnegan from Nagato’s body after his death. He then implanted the left Rinnegan in himself and hid the right Rinnegan, unable to withstand the power of both eyes.

When Madara was reincarnated by to fight the allied Shinobi forces, Madara once again had access to this dōjutsu. Based on the data gathered over the years, and Kabuto hypothesized that since Sharingan was derived from Rinnegan, it was possible for the dōjutsu to transform into Rinnegan as part of “natural evolution”. However, during Madara’s true rebirth as a living being, he no longer possessed his eyes, as his reincarnated state was merely a reflection of his former self and he had died without his current eyes. A white man managed to retrieve the right Rinnegan from Hagoromo’s hiding place and returned it to Madara, who implanted it in the previously empty right eye socket.

After receiving half of Hagoromo’s power, Sasuke’s left eye awakened a form of Rinnegan containing six tomoes.

Abilities of the Rinnegan

Those who possess the Rinnegan have access to a multitude of abilities, such as the ability to master the five fundamental transformations of nature and the ability to use any technique. Rinnegan enables the user to see chakras, including the chakra points inside the body, as well as otherwise invisible barriers. However, Rinnegan’s field of vision can be blocked by simple means such as smoke bombs. This dōjutsu can also completely decipher the tablet of the Sage of the Six Paths, unlike the Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan.

The Rinnegan gives the ability to summon and control the demonic statue of the Outer Path, although this cannot be done using an unauthentic Rinnegan. With this dōjutsu, Madara could perform the Limbo: Border Jail technique, creating body shadows that are only visible to Rinnegan. Sasuke’s Rinnegan allows him to move spaces at a certain distance from him. Sasuke’s Rinnegan also retained his Sharingan powers, including the technique of his left Mangekyō, Amaterasu, and the ability to cast powerful , which he was able to use to control all nine tailed beasts at once.

Rinnegan’s trademark power is the Six Paths technique, which grants the user multiple abilities. The Way of the Deva can be used to attract and repel targets. The Way of Asura can clothe the user in mechanized armor and bestow various weapons. The Human Path can read minds, at the cost of tearing out the victim’s soul. Animal Way can summon various creatures. The Preta Way can absorb any chakra-based ninjutsu, even into a person’s body. The Naraka Way can summon the King of the Underworld, who can be used for interrogation and restoration.

In addition, the user is granted the Outer Way, which gives him control over life and death. It allows the user to transmit chakra to black receivers as well as manifest the chakra chains of the Demonic Statue, which can be used to bind and control tailed beasts in the same way as Sharingan and Wood Release. The Outer Path offers a shared field of vision between the Rinnegan wielder, the King of Hell, creatures summoned by the Animal Path and reanimated corpses, all of whom have the user’s Rinnegan reflected in their respective eyes.

By incorporating up to six corpses with chakra receptors, the user can control the corpses as extensions of themselves, called the Six Ways of Pain. Each of the bodies is capable of using one of the abilities of the Six Ways technique, although their use is inferior to that of the user’s body. used this method to control six reincarnated jinchūriki. Their eyes sported the Sharingan and Rinnegan, identical to Obito’s, and their former tailed beasts were temporarily linked to their bodies using chakra receptors while remaining in Obito’s possession via the demonic statue.

The Rinnegan’s various abilities remain intact when transplanted into another individual, but it’s only when the original owner wields both eyes that they can access the Rinnegan’s full power. Moreover, only the original owner of this dōjutsu has demonstrated the ability to deactivate Rinnegan. Because of its eye power and powerful chakra, not all individuals are able to handle a transplanted Rinnegan, a trait that is compounded by the attempt to implant two. The effects of this dōjutsu on chakra reserves are unknown, although has handled two transplanted Rinnegan without issue for years, even in his emaciated state and before being trained as a shinobi.

The Rinnegan also has the ability to cancel blindness in one eye and restore its former powers upon awakening.
